An Educator's Guide to Schoolwide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports


Implement Schoolwide Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (SWPBIS). Build a schoolwide tiered model that teaches students prosocial skills, improves school climate and culture, and lays the foundation for academic excellence. This workshop guides your school or district through every step of implementing SWPBIS, including identifying, teaching, and reinforcing schoolwide expectations; developing a discipline process; creating targeted supports for students; building buy-in; and evaluating both the implementation of SWPBIS and its outcomes for students. This workshop can be customized to learn how to implement the entire model or one individual tier.

Learning Outcomes

  • Learn the foundational tenets and salient features of SWPBIS
  • Understand the four key elements of SWPBIS and what they look like in practice
  • Examine Tiers One, Two, and/or Three in depth, respectively, and be ready for implementation
  • Apply the Problem-Solving Model (PSM) to answer questions about the implementation of and the impact of SWPBIS
  • Examine how each key element interacts with the PSM to support student learning and social behavior outcomes

Recommended Participants

All educators, particularly leadership, administration, coaches, and those implementing SWPBIS

Time Frame

  • Two consecutive days for a thorough overview of Tier One, Tier Two, or Tier Three
  • One- or two-day session on use of the Problem-Solving Model with SWPBIS
  • Selected one-day sessions to dive deeper into topics related to SWPBIS, such as implementation, building buy-in, classroom management, or intervention development such as check-in/check-out or functional behavior assessment to build behavior support plans
  • Consecutive days for a SWPBIS Academy to train relevant school teams on use of SWPBIS, which is differentiated based on the appropriate tier for the school team (e.g., two days on Tier One for beginning schools, two days on Tier Two for second-year schools, two days on Tier Three for third-year schools)
