Starting a teaching career is both exciting and challenging. Montgomery Public Schools in Montgomery, Alabama, designed the Teacher Residency Academy to ensure new, alternatively licensed educators feel supported, find success in their classrooms, and remain in the profession. This one-hour event will provide a comprehensive overview of the Academy, highlighting how it draws on the proven frameworks of The New Art and Science of Teaching and The Beginning Teacher’s Field Guide to blend research-backed instructional practices with practical wellness strategies.

Educators at all grade levels understand that what happens inside the classroom is deeply connected to students’ personal, emotional, and mental well-being outside the classroom. Although there has been a massive focus in education recently on issues such as trauma and equity, there is a clear and urgent need to adopt an evolved model of schooling that can approach the problem from a strength-based perspective.

In this workshop, participants will discover how to build a coaching culture and mindset in their school or district, including those without designated coaches. Participants will dive into the coaching process through the use of short videos of classroom instruction to experience the process, tools, and feedback protocol.

This 2-Day Workshop will emphasize the importance of starting with the rationale and process for prioritizing standards in standards-based grading rather than starting with the grading system.

Explore the research on goal setting and two different kinds of learning goals. Then learn how to design goals that align with proficiency scales, measure student performance, and track results.
