James Neihof, EdD, is the director of deeper learning for the Green River Region Educational Cooperative in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He works directly with district and school leaders as a leadership coach, mentor, and professional learning facilitator.

Previously, Dr. Neihof served for 12 years as superintendent of the Shelby County Public Schools in Shelbyville, Kentucky. Under his leadership the district grew both in enrollment and in academic success. In 2013, he led a strategic planning effort establishing a roadmap for student-centered learning in the district. That strategic plan paved the way for the creation of a Profile of a Graduate in 2017. In 2018, the district embarked on a second strategic plan designed to prepare graduates to achieve the competencies of the Profile of a Graduate. Throughout these years the district’s leaders participated alongside him in Kentucky's Network of Innovative Schools and Kentucky’s Competency-based Education Consortium while working with education partners including EdLeader21, Envision Learning, Big Picture Learning, 2Revolutions, Empower Learning Management Systems and the Aurora Institute.

Dr. Neihof has presented at state and national conferences about student-centered learning, strategic planning, competency-based learning and student-agency. His blogs for Competencyworks focus on the learning sciences and student agency.

Dr. Neihof earned a bachelor’s degree from Morehead State University, a master’s degree from University of Louisville, and his doctorate in education from Northern Kentucky University.
