Teaching in the Standards-Based Classroom Workshop
Teaching in the standards-based classroom requires significantly more than simply knowing the standards. A true focus on standards in the classroom requires a teacher to understand multiple elements of a standards-based learning environment, including planning, instruction, assessment, and feedback. This session will present a thoughtful and logical approach to planning for and delivering a high-quality opportunity to learn that increases the potential for students to acquire understanding of the knowledge and skills included in standards. Participants will walk away with information, insights, and ideas as well as a plethora of resources for use in their own classrooms.
Learning Outcomes
Review the rationale and processes for prioritizing standards and developing proficiency scales.
Learn methods for creating yearlong plans for teaching the standards.
Examine eight steps for developing cohesive instructional cycles.
Learn how to create or refine assessments for monitoring progress toward mastery of standards.
Examine ideas for using proficiency scales to communicate performance of standards.
Jan K. Hoegh has been an educator for over 35 years. She has served as a classroom teacher, building leader, professional development specialist, high school assistant principal, curriculum coordinator, and assistant director of statewide assessment.
