What Works in Oklahoma Schools: A Comprehensive Needs Assessment of Oklahoma Schools

In 2010, sponsored by the Oklahoma State Department of Education, Marzano Research conducted a needs assessment and study to determine the importance of nine essential elements to being classified as a school in need of improvement. Sixty-one schools were involved, approximately half of which were on improvement status.

Data for Phase I was collected from surveys of administrators, teachers, students, and parents in each of the 61 schools. Phase II included a more detailed examination of classroom variables important to achievement in Oklahoma schools, primarily using data from principal interviews, classroom observations, and video recording observations. Teacher data was anonymous, and video recordings of teachers were viewed only by researchers involved in the study. The Phase III report provides a toolkit that can be used by Oklahoma principals and teachers to determine the best courses of action for their schools and classrooms.
