New Book Introduces Instructional Model Designed Exclusively for Art and Music Educators

Bloomington, Ind. (July 23, 2019)—In The New Art and Science of Teaching Art and Music—a joint publication of Solution Tree and ASCD—authors Mark Onuscheck, Robert J. Marzano, and Jonathan Grice address how to effectively meet students’ needs in art and music classrooms.

Part of The New Art and Science of Teaching series—which includes six books, one DVD, and one curated video playlist—this resource presents an art- and music-specific model of instruction within the context of The New Art and Science of Teaching framework.

“The New Art and Science of Teaching is a very general [instructional] framework,” explained Marzano. “By that I mean it talks about instructional strategies in general, but instruction in reading is going to have some significant differences from instruction in mathematics or science, for example. In The New Art and Science of Teaching series, subject-matter experts take the framework and translate it to their particular discipline.”

The New Art and Science of Teaching Art and Music is divided into three parts:

Part I, focused on feedback, describes how teachers can articulate the content to be learned using learning progressions, and then assess students’ current level of understanding.

Part II addresses content. The authors articulate instructional strategies for teaching the art and music content that students need to learn.

Part III, concentrated on context, reviews issues pertaining to student engagement, rules and procedures, building relationships, and communicating high expectations to all students.

The New Art and Science of Teaching Art and Music is a gem,” explained Tim Lautzenheiser, founder of Attitude Concepts for Today. “It would be impossible to consume the content of this book and not come away a far better teacher... This is a book to read, to study, to reread, and to integrate the wisdom of its pages into every aspect of our teaching journey.”
